⁵⁵ However, he had only begun the work of demolition when he suffered a stroke. His mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, unable to utter a word or give commands concerning his house. ⁵⁶ Before much time had passed, he died in great agony. ⁵⁷ On learning that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was left in peace for two years.
